0 & 2 and sniffing glue

It looks like I picked the wrong season to stop licking toads.

The Stros have started off 0-2, but there is one good to great sign of hope: Michael Bourn.

Now, even though the poor dude went to the University of Houston, which means he couldn’t read Everybody Poops phonetically, he is undoubtedly one fast dude.  AND, better yet, he has three walks in his first nine plate appearances (PA).  This is huge, and this, I believe, is what it will take for him to be an elite leadoff man.

Now, here’s the risk: NL pitchers figure out he can’t hit a bull on the ass with a bass fiddle, and they start pounding everything down the heart of the plate.  This, sadly, is a possible scenario.  But, if he can continue to draw walks at a high pace, about 20% of PAs, then we could have a special guy at the top of the order.

  1. I think you jinxed him. Pence and Berkman finally got a couple hits, but Bourn isn’t getting on base tonight.

I’ve accepted the fact that this team might take some time to gel, and Coop might have to tinker with the line-up a bit… But I really want to avoid an opening series sweep. That would just be demoralizing.

Next time the top of the order comes around, I’m expecting a big inning.

    Sigh.

  3. What the… Did Berkman just steal third, or did I imagine that?

  4. It’s a damn good thing he did too. Maybe Agent Bourn has given the rest of the team some inspiration? This should be interesting to watch.

  5. That was awesome. We just haven’t had a whole lot of games like that the past couple years. Way to go, Fat Elvis. Let’s hope Valverde already got all of his choking out of the way in the eight.

  6. When Jose Cruz Jr made the team, I assumed it was mostly because his dad is a base coach, but that’s the second pretty crucial walk he’s had so far. It’s nice to have a pinch hitter who isn’t Orlando Palmiero. And unless I’m much mistaken, we may have actually seen some clutch hitting tonight and I’m not entirely sure how to handle it.

@Kyle - Take a few deep breaths, maybe some Excedrin. Or just hit the bottle. Either way I think we can get through this.

  8. Dang, I had personal junk to do last night and didn’t catch the game. Looks like missing this one was a mistake.

And, hopefully not jinxing him, but it’s nice to see Berkman hitting for power early in the season.

  9. Yeah, it was pointed out that Puma already has more extra base hits this year than he did last April in total.
